2017 MSBL 28+ Champions - South Shore Spartans

In the franchise's inaugural season of the Boston Men's Baseball League, the South Shore Spartans are the 2017 MSBL 28+ Division Champions. Their road to the championship was certainly not an easy one but with a combined team effort, they would find a way to advance past the #3 seeded Somerville Senators (16-7-1) in round 1, grind their way past the #1 seeded Boston Bombers (23-1) in a fantastic series in round 2, and eventually sweep the #2 seeded Boston Cardinals (18-5-1) in the best of five championship series. The Cardinals would earn their way back to the championship series for the second straight year in similar fashion, sweeping past both the #3 seeded Natick Knights (12-12-1) in round 1 and #1 seeded Waltham Sox (21-4) in round 2.

The Cardinals would finish the regular season with an 18-5-1 record, earning themselves the #2 seed in their division. Their regular season' success was due in large part to their dominant pitching staff and their league-leading 1.13 team ERA. The Spartans would put up an almost identical regular season, finishing with a 19-6 record and also earning themselves the #2 seed in their division. Their offense batted a remarkable .356 in the regular season, including a league-leading 5 homeruns, while plating 199 runs, tying the Bombers for the league lead in runs scored.

The postseason would bring much of the same for the Spartans, as their offense, led by Chris Curran (15-30, .500 AVG) proved to be too much for the Cardinals' pitching staff. As a team, the Spartans would bat .316 with a .426 on base percentage, scoring 70 runs on 92 hits with 21 of those hits going for extra bases including a HR from John Jones in the first round. Tim Troup and Mike Smith would go a combined 7-0 on the hill with 35 K's and a 0.42 ERA.

Congratulations to the South Shore Spartans on winning the 2017 MSBL 28+ Championship in just their first year in the league and to the Boston Cardinals on a great season and second straight Finals' appearance.
