2017 MSBL Masters Champions - Metro Red Sox
The 2017 Metro Red Sox captured the franchise's 9th MSBL Masters League Championship behind strong pitching from Steve Hueston (3-0, 15 K's, 2.45 ERA), Sam Steed (2-0, 13 K's, 2.00 ERA) and Bill Smeglin (1-0, 0.00 ERA) who went a combined 6-0 in the postseason. The pitching staff was aided by the Sox offense and timely hitting from Russ Ward (10-21, .476 AVG), Mike Kalfopoulos (7-17, .412 AVG), and Steve Busby (8-20, .400 AVG) to name a few. Of course, the addition of 2017 Masters' MVP Darwin Hernandez to the Sox roster helped add that extra spark in the lineup all season.
A theme throughout the year for the Red Sox was the strength of their pitching staff, consisting of Dave Lindsey, Steve Hueston and Sammy Stead, followed by great relief work from Bill Smeglin and Bobby Austin. "We knew as a team, if we could score runs, our pitching would hold our opponents' offense in check. If we could make the routine plays defensively, we knew we would be okay. We had an inside joke all season, using a quote from a former college teammate of ours - 'Hit .500 and Field .500, that's a good day!'. Those were words we would often laugh about after many games this season", said Mark Moise of the Red Sox.
Congratulations to the Metro Red Sox on the franchise's 9th Masters Championship and to the Saugus Sea Dogs who had to get past the undefeated Somerville Alibrandis to earn the franchise's first Finals' appearance.
